This single-set show was part of the Laguna Seca Daze festival that also included 10,000 Maniacs, Blues Traveler, and The Samples. Trey teased Fire (Ohio Players) in Maze. This was the first time that Silent was played without The Horse. I Didn’t Know was dedicated to the guy stuck on top of the Ferris Wheel and featured Fish on the Madonna Washboard. Antelope contained a Simpsons signal and Possum included a tease of L.A. Woman.

DollarBill Before taking six weeks off, the boys turn in another average one set show for the Laguna Seca Daze festival. Maybe they had a little too much fun the night before as there were missed sections here and there, but not too bad. The recording was another good one, like last night’s, maybe the same taper? Anyway…

Fishman gets the opener spot tonight with Lengthwise. This gives you the album feel of listening to Rift going into a rocking Maze. Mike was a little off and it seemed like they weren’t warmed up yet. Guelah also suffered a bit with sloppy playing and just was not as tight as it could’ve been. Poor Heart was good, maybe now they are warmed up? Nope, Trey fell off in the middle of Foam and I can’t think of a harder song to try to get back into after you fall off. Not the best Foam by any means. No Horse for the first time before a pretty good Silent, and this one has gotten consistently better over the course of this year. Nice transition going into Antelope, which was patient and pretty good overall. YaMar is getting better, as it has been recently introduced back into the set list. This one was fast and fun, though they almost blew the ending with Mike’s foreign guy rant. IDK brings Fish out with the washboard solo; funny stuff as usual. Melt also had some trouble spots from Trey and was just ok to my ears. Contact was nice to hear and pretty well played. Llama rocked as usual, no real problems here. Golgi was good, but nothing to special, just average.

Possum gets the encore spot tonight and was well played, but again, nothing too special.

I’m not sure what others are hearing, but again this is not four star playing by any means. There were way too many missed notes and sections for that to be true. Sorry folks, just my opinion. I’m going with three stars, because it wasn’t that bad.

Review by jcmarckx

jcmarckx This show was a testament to how much I loved Phish. I was so fried by this time that all I could think about was going home to my bed. I had just seen 8 of 9 Dead shows in the last 2 weeks, and headed down to Laguna Seca just to see Phish. I didn't know they would only be one set shows, and I really didn't care about the other bands. I also went because Laguna Seca was kinda sacred ground to me after seeing the Dead there in '87 & '88.
The festival was fun, but I really didn't care anymore by this show. At least the night before we had the Allman's, but as much as I used to like 10,000 Maniacs, I just didn't care by this point. I was exhausted.
I think (?) Phish came on after Blues Traveler on this night. They were before them on Saturday. They played a high energy set of the usual suspects, and really blew everybody else away (both nights, really). I kinda liked BT, but I was all about Phish on this weekend. When I think of this show, the Antelope and Melt instantly come to mind. The obvious highlights for me.
I was just stoked to have them come back to NorCal so soon (after the March runs), and I had a lot of fun while they were on stage. It's just that my main memory of these two shows was how tired I was, and how nervous I was that I might not have a job anymore when I got back home.
I was tempted to leave right after the Phish set, but my buddies talked me into staying the night and getting some rest before the 3 1/2 hour drive home. Have you ever camped at a Phish festival? Yeah, there was no rest that night.
