MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 126

Welcome to Mystery Jam Monday Part 126 here at Phish.net. This jam was hand picked by @bl002e, the third professor to receive tenure here at Mystery Jam University. As usual we will be playing for an MP3 download, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). A hint will be posted on Tuesday (if necessary) and the answer will be posted on Wednesday. Good luck...

Wednesday Answer: Congrats to MomaDan for correctly ID'ing the 7/20/99 "Misty Mountain Hop," and kudos to bl002e for a nice MJ selection. That said, it just goes to show how hard it is to stump the users. And with that, the Blog is going to call it a year. Mystery Jam Mondays will return in 2013...

bl002e I think I have it figured out. Doesn't it sound like that jam they did in that song they played on that tour that year, or am I crazy?

jragz44 Does sound like a pebble now.

uctweezer First thought was 2.0. Agreed with @andrewrose that it's a P&M. It's in the right key for it... didn't pick up on it in 4/17/04. I'm going to go with:

Pebbles and Marbles 2/20/03

DWD585 Must be DWD. 7/22/97 I'll say

andrewrose Well it sounded like a Down with Disease to me, so much so that I figured it was a red herring. Also sounded 2.0 so I figured P&M. Only thing is I couldn't detect it in any version that I had which is all of 2003. 4/17/04 was a blind guess.. Have never heard it but remember reading it was a scorcher. Don't hear it in any other 03 ones though. Maybe it is a Disease...
, comment by jmponder
jmponder I really don't think it's from 2.0. Trey's tone just isn't indicative of that era, to me it sounds like '99 or '00
, comment by ProfessorDude
ProfessorDude I also hear 2.0. It has that characteristically "muddy" sound, combined with the heavy use of whammy pedal (and the flubs). But I was hearing a Rock n Roll type vamp underneath.

uctweezer This sounds *so* similar to the Pebbles and Marbles jams of 2.0 but I haven't been able to pin it down, and I have every 2.0 show... hmmm... maybe it's a double reverse red herring? And I didn't realize that the jam for DWD is in the same key as P&M. Someone will figure this out, but I'm still guessing 2.0...
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose It could be 99 or 2000..

, comment by TheDeputy
TheDeputy I don't know, but it's fun to think about. I feel like this should be a known jam. Like, if somebody had this tape and listened to it with any regularity they will know this jam immediately. Anyway, I'd rule out 2.0, Trey's tone is not gritty enough.
I'd say it's something summer 99. For example, everybody loves Camden 99, especially the whammy part nearer to the end. Anyway, I feel that the whammy bending use came to be summer 99. And in this clip, Trey is learning about it, playing with it, getting his kicks with his 'new' toy. Also, to support 99, at about 41 seconds Trey hit's/touches on the infamous 99 re-occuring riff. the jiboo riff. That riff was all over the place that summer.
yeah, sorry about the rant.

Not 4.17.04 Pebbles (but you should give it a whirl @andrewrose... heck of a first set too: Halley's -> Tweezer; Piper -> Frankenstein, Bowie are very solid renditions)

As for MJM, the blog has left me, somehow, both Stevie Wonder'd and Beethoven'd me.

Thunder Seems to me like 99/00. Like @TheDeputy says, I identify that Jibboo lick mostly from that year (although I have spotted as far back as 96 and maybe earlier) and especially the summer. Maybe the Halley's from Great Woods 7.13.99?

MomaDan Woah I actually got one. Misty Mountain Hop 7/20/99

I narrowed it down to July 99 and searched through Weakapa

MomaDan oops, didn't finish. Lets just say the whammy whale call and not 2009 or 10 sound quality were the clues

I threw on some Summer 99 after my son went to sleep to see if I could spot it. Good call. Confirmed at just past the 8 min mark. The New Years Eve MJM should be a fun one.
, comment by bl002e
bl002e Well done, @MomaDan.

Technically, @andrewrose did guess first with his PM to me (figured I'd wait until someone officially won before I confirmed, even though you obviously knew it :) ). Unfortunately, there are do-overs in neither MJM nor Phish. Unless of course we're talking about a Hampton YEM.

Hope I at least brought to light a phenomenal summer '99 jam that gets lost in the glut of highlights from that tour. Here's my sales pitch to LBC when I picked this gem:

One of summer '99's most overlooked, underrated jams. Sure, it's of the type I, straight-ahead rocker variety, but they hit some of the same euphoric ground they also explored that summer in the 7/8/99 Fee, 7/10/99 CDT, 7/21/99 MLT, etc. Yet, I'm not sure even the most rabid of summer '99 fans remember much about it other than the fact that it was a great, unexpected cover choice.

Lesson learned! That security update down-time today threw me in a panic. Glad some other underrated gems from that era (hello 12/8/99 Disease and 7/13/99 Halley's) maybe got some play as a result.
, comment by TheDeputy
TheDeputy I didn't guess the jam, but I'm proud of my accurate analysis. I actually do know something about Phish!
, comment by MomaDan
MomaDan I thought it was kinda funny how even though it was a rare cover the jam sounded like it could belong in any phish song.
, comment by unibrah
unibrah Sounds exactly like a DWD jam... I would have guessed the one from DTE this past summer
, comment by mikh2wg
mikh2wg Awww, it fell in my Summer 99 blindspot! One of the only 2 shows I didn't see that summer. Those soaring major-key themes came up again and again on that tour.
, comment by metawhy
metawhy great pick!

very underrated show with a stout 2001 > MMHop!!
